There is no single right answer, but there is a useful rule of thumb: a maintenance clean every two to four weeks, and a deeper detail two to four times a year.
How you land within that range depends on how you use the car, where it is parked, the season and how sharp you want it to look. Here is how to think about it.
Maintenance clean vs full detail — they are different jobs
People often mix these up, then either over-pay for deep details they do not need or let a car slide until it needs rescuing. They are two different things.
Maintenance clean
A regular, lighter touch: exterior wash, interior vacuum, glass and dashboard. It keeps a clean car clean. It is quicker and cheaper because grime never gets the chance to set properly.
Full detail
A periodic deeper clean: decontamination, paint protection, interior conditioning and a more complete reset. It helps protect the car for the months ahead.
The cheapest car to keep clean is one that is cleaned often. Grime, salt, bird mess and tree sap are far easier — and gentler on your paint — to remove before they bond. Leave them too long and they need stronger methods that cost more and carry more risk.
By how you actually use the car
Daily driver or commuter
A maintenance clean every two to three weeks keeps it presentable. A full detail twice a year — usually a spring reset and an autumn clean before the worst winter weather — helps keep the paintwork protected.
School-run and family car
Interiors take the biggest hit here: crumbs, mud, dog hair, drink spills and everyday clutter. Prioritise more frequent interior maintenance. The exterior can often stretch a little longer, depending on how the car is used and where it is parked.
Weekend or low-mileage car
These cars may not need cleaning as often on the outside, but they should not be ignored. Bird mess and tree sap can mark paint whether the car is driven daily or not. A wash before storage and a periodic protective detail matter more than raw mileage.
By season
- Winter. This is the demanding one. Road salt is corrosive and clings to lower panels, arches and the underside. Wash more often in winter, not less.
- Spring. This is the natural moment for a full reset detail after months of salt, rain and road grime.
- Summer. Tree sap, pollen and bird mess can bake onto paint in heat. Deal with them quickly rather than letting them sit.
- Autumn. This is the time to put protection down before winter does its worst.
