Found items and keeping your belongings safe during a car clean.

What happens if we find wallets, documents, cards, keys or personal items during an interior clean — and how we handle them carefully.

Personal belongings found inside a car during professional interior cleaning

Cars often become moving storage spaces. Receipts, coins, bank cards, keys, toys, work documents and personal items can end up under seats, inside door pockets, between cushions or in the boot.

At Blue Dales Auto Care, we treat found items seriously. Interior cleaning means working around personal space, so our approach is simple: respect the customer’s belongings, avoid unnecessary handling and make sure anything found is returned safely.

Why we ask customers to clear the car first

Before an interior clean, we always recommend removing valuables, personal documents, loose change, electronics, child items, medication and anything fragile. This protects your belongings and also helps our team clean the vehicle properly.

A car with fewer loose items is easier to vacuum, wipe down and inspect. It also reduces the risk of something being accidentally moved, missed or mistaken for rubbish.

Common things found during interior cleaning

Not every find is dramatic. Most are ordinary forgotten items. But even ordinary items can be sensitive, valuable or important to the customer.

  • Bank cards, wallets and loose cash. These are treated as valuable items and are returned directly to the customer wherever possible.
  • Keys, access fobs and garage remotes. These may provide access to property, so they are handled carefully and not discussed unnecessarily.
  • Personal documents. Letters, bills, insurance papers, work notes or ID copies are not read or photographed. They are kept private.
  • Jewellery and sentimental items. Rings, earrings, watches and small keepsakes can fall into seat gaps or boot corners and are separated from waste immediately.
  • Medication and child-related items. These are never thrown away. They are kept aside and highlighted to the customer after the clean.
  • Sharp, leaking or unsafe items. If something looks unsafe to handle, we pause that area and contact the customer before continuing.

How we handle valuable items

If our team finds something that appears valuable, we stop cleaning around that area and separate the item from any rubbish or loose debris. We do not place valuables in bins, bags or mixed piles.

Where the customer is present, the item is returned straight away. If the customer is not nearby, we keep the item safely aside and contact them using the booking details provided.

What we do with documents and private papers

Personal documents are handled with discretion. Our team does not read private paperwork, photograph it or share its contents. If documents need to be moved so an area can be cleaned, they are placed carefully in a visible and safe part of the vehicle.

This can include paperwork found in glove boxes, door pockets, seat backs, boot storage spaces or under floor mats.

What counts as rubbish?

Obvious rubbish may be removed as part of the clean. This usually includes empty packaging, disposable cups, wrappers, old tissues, loose dirt and general waste.

But if something is unclear, we do not guess. A receipt, note, envelope, parking ticket or small item may look unimportant but still matter to the customer. When in doubt, we keep it aside.

Unexpected or unusual finds

Sometimes a clean turns up items the customer thought were lost: a missing house key under the seat rail, a bank card slipped beside the centre console, a watch in the boot lining, or a child’s small toy hidden under a mat.

These situations are handled calmly. The item is identified, kept separate from cleaning waste, and returned or reported to the customer. Our goal is not only to clean the car, but to leave the customer confident that their belongings were respected.

What customers should remove before we arrive

To make the appointment smoother, we recommend removing the following before the booking:

  • Wallets, purses, bank cards and cash.
  • House keys, office keys, access fobs and garage remotes.
  • Personal paperwork, work documents and identity documents.
  • Medication, inhalers and health-related items.
  • Electronics, cables, chargers and headphones.
  • Child seats, toys and baby items where possible.
  • Fragile items, jewellery and anything sentimental.

Why this matters for both sides

A clean car is the main goal, but trust is just as important. Interior cleaning involves working inside a private space, often around everyday belongings. Clear handling rules protect the customer, the cleaner and the service.

When customers remove personal items beforehand, the clean is faster, safer and more thorough. When our team finds something unexpected, we handle it carefully and make sure the customer knows.

Our simple rule

If it looks valuable, private, personal, sensitive or unclear, we do not treat it as rubbish. We separate it, keep it safe and return it to the customer.

That is the standard we follow on every interior clean, whether it is a family car, a work vehicle, a company van or a regular maintenance booking.
